2012-13 National Competition

The 2012-13 ESU National Public Speaking Competition was held on February 28, 2013 at Pickering College in Newmarket, Ontario. Thanks to Tamer Higazi and his team at Pickering for hosting a great tournament! A total of 28 students competed on the theme "A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand". The event featured a wide variety of topics and very entertaining and competitive speeches. A total of eight speakers were selected for the finals. The winner was Andy Xia from the University of Toronto Schools, and he will advance to the International Public Speaking Competition in London in May. There was a tie in the finals for second between Leilah Mouna from Pickering College and Sonia Mahajan of Branksome Hall. Anthony Marchese from De La Salle was fourth, and Connor Campbell also from De La Salle was fifth. Other participants in the finals included Khaleel Rajwani ( UTS ), Sarah Harrison ( UTS ), and Benjamin Feldman ( York School ). 2011-12 National Competition

ESU National Public Speaking Tournament Results
The ESU Public Speaking tournament was held outside of Montreal for the first time, and was hosted by Branksome Hall in Toronto. A total of 27 students from six different provinces spoke on the theme "The Wisdom of Youth". The event featured a wide range of topics on interesting issues. Everyone participated in two preliminary rounds, and this was followed by the finals featuring the top five speakers who were: Joseph Worndl from De La Salle in Toronto, Aislin Flynn from Sacred Heart School of Halifax, Anisah Mahomed from Branksome Hall in Toronto, Simran Dhunna from Glenforest in Mississauga, and Tae-Hu Kim from Richmond Hill SS just north of Toronto. The final round was held after dinner, and the tournament champion was Anisah Mahomed from Branksome Hall. Anisah wins the right to be the Canadian representative at the International Public Speaking Competition next May. This is the 4th year in a year that a student from Branksome was won the tournament. SImran Dhunna and Aislin Flynn were 2nd and 3rd respectively. Quebec was represented by three students, including Dan Ton-That who was a finalist last year from Selwyn House. Special thanks to Tracy Dalglish for hosting a wonderful event, to Jim Allan for representing ESU Canada, to John Wright, ESU Canada President for his constant support, and to HSBC who are international sponsors of this event. 2010-11 National Competition

ESU Public Speaking Results
The National ESU Public Speaking Tournament was held in Montreal on Sunday, October 31. A record 38 participants from Winnipeg to Montreal competed in this annual event. The theme of the speeches, "Lessons For The Future" brought forth a variety of very interesting and entertaining speeches. Six speakers were selected for the finals. The top speaker was Erin Singer from Branksome Hall was first overall, the third straight year a student from Branksome won the event. In second place was Dan Ton-That from Selwyn House, who was a finalist last year as well. Both Erin and Dan have won the right to represent Canada at the International Public Speaking Competition held in London next May. Third place went to Alyssa Muzyk from Havergal College, fourth went to Anisah Mahomed from Branskome Hall, fifth to Kathryn Burczynski from St. Mary’s, and rounding out the finalists in sixth place was Alex Izydorczyk from St. Paul’s. 2009-10 National Competition

ESU Public Speaking Competition
The English Speaking Union of Canada once again hosted the HSBC National Public Speaking Competition in Montreal. Hosted the day after the McGill high school tournament, there was an opportunity for many schools to attend that would not otherwise be able to. We had 27 competitors from Winnipeg to Halifax speaking on the theme "Mapping the Global Future". A total of seven students were selected for the finals, and in a remarkable feat, three students in the final tied with the same score for first! Using a tie-breaking criteria that was based on number of first place votes, the first place speaker was Ethan Chess of St. Paul’s in Winnipeg, second place was Jordyn Benattar from Branksome Hall in Toronto, and third place was Elizabeth Stratton also from Branksome. 2008-09 National Competition

ESU National Public Speaking Tournament
Lower Canada College hosted the annual HSBC National Public Speaking Competition on behalf of the English Speaking Union of Canada. There was a solid representation of top public speakers from Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Each speaker delivered a speech on the theme "New Horizons, New Frontiers". The top five speakers advanced to the championship round. After some outstanding speeches, the top speaker went to Zeenia Framzore from Branksome Hall in Toronto. Second place went to Lia D’Abate from Marianopolis College. Both will, assuming the accept, attend the International Public Speaking Competition in London, England in May. Third place went to Julia Deutsch, also from Marionopolis. The other finalists were Nick Di Giorgio from Lower Canada College and Daniel Knight from Selwyn House. The awards were presented by John Wright, ESU Canada President. Congratulations to everyone for an outstanding performance.

2006-07 National Competition

Lower Canada College hosted the national qualifier and 10 students participated. The tournament was won by Niqui Kolhi of Lower Canada College, and second place went to Miranda Thyssien of Trafalgar School for Girls.
